Local Semantics in HPSG
Manfred Sailer
In this paper we will present empirical motivation for a split between
local and nonlocal semantic phenomena, analogous to the distinction
between local and nonlocal phenomena in syntax. We will show that
techniques of underspecified semantics can be combined with
Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar to integrate this split into the
architecture of the grammar. This results in a more restricted theory
of selection and a conceptually clearer distinction between lexical
and compositional semantics.
