Two Types of Postverbal Subjects in Spanish: Evidence from Binding

Raúl Aranovich

Spanish has a distributive anaphoric determiner sendos 'each (other)', which is subject to Principle A of the Binding Theory. The fact that such distributive anaphoric item can appear in postverbal subjects is evidence that some postverbal subjects in Spanish, as in other Romance languages, are inside the VP. Whereas the class of verbs that can have VP internal subjects is limited, an unaccusative analysis is discarded in favour of a pragmatic constraint, excluding 'informationally heavy' verbs from the construction.
