Quantifier Scope in Relative Clauses and Definiteness effects
Theodora Alexopoulou et Caroline Heycock
We review recent syntactic and semantic approaches to "multiple individual" readings arising in DPs containing relative clauses in predicative sentences. We argue that such readings involve natural functions, thus departing from recent proposals (Sharvit 1997) viewing such readings as the result of pair-list functions. Further, building on recent observations by Bianchi (1999), we show that such readings are restricted to relatives headed by definites. In order to account for this fact, we adopt Löbner's (1985) view of definites as functional concepts and extend his proposal to relative-containing DPs.
