Interpretable Features and Feature-driven A-bar Movement
Frederick J. Newmeyer
In the Minimalist Program, movement is said to be triggered by morphological features having a particular interpretation. For A-bar movements, these include features such as wh, Topic, and Focus. This paper argues against the idea that A-bar movements should be triggered in such a way and goes on to advocate a stronger version of the autonomy of syntax than is presupposed in much current work.
